Airtel Africa has switched on Starlink Mobile connectivity in the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking the first time a satellite-to-mobile service has gone live anywhere on the African continent, according to TechNext.ng. The DRC is one of the most challenging connectivity markets on earth. The country covers roughly 2.3 million square kilometres — larger than Western Europe — yet fibre and tower infrastructure reaches only a fraction of its roughly 100 million people. That gap makes the DRC a logical proving ground for direct-to-device satellite technology, which bypasses the economics of building base stations in remote or conflict-affected terrain.
For Airtel Africa, the launch is both a technical milestone and a competitive positioning move. The London-listed operator, which reported 149.9 million customers across 14 African markets as of its last full-year results, has been under pressure from declining revenues in some francophone markets and currency headwinds across the continent. The Starlink Mobile technology — built on SpaceX's direct-to-cell capability — works with standard LTE handsets, meaning no satellite phone or external antenna is required. Rivals including MTN Group and Orange, both of which operate in the DRC and across similarly fragmented African markets, will now face a direct benchmark. If Airtel can demonstrate measurable subscriber additions or ARPU improvements tied to satellite coverage in the DRC, it intensifies pressure on every major operator to negotiate comparable arrangements with SpaceX or competing low-earth-orbit providers such as AST SpaceMobile — which has its own agreements with several African operators — and Eutelsat's OneWeb.
For regulators and governments, the deployment raises near-term questions about spectrum licensing and revenue-sharing obligations. Satellite-to-mobile services occupy a regulatory grey area in many African jurisdictions: the signal originates from orbit, touches a foreign operator's constellation, and lands on a local SIM — a chain that existing telecom licensing frameworks were not designed to handle. The DRC's Autorité de Régulation de la Poste et des Télécommunications du Congo will likely become a reference case for how other African regulators approach similar applications.
From an investment standpoint, the launch is a modest but real data point for Airtel Africa's growth story at a time when the stock has faced sustained pressure from dollar-denominated debt servicing costs and naira and kwacha devaluations eroding local-currency revenues. Demonstrating a credible path to rural subscriber growth in a market the size of the DRC — without the capital expenditure of tower rollouts — is the kind of structural argument that analysts covering the stock have been waiting for.
Why it matters: Africa has roughly 900 million people without reliable internet access, and the economics of terrestrial infrastructure alone will not close that gap in this decade.
