Nairobi-based ARC Ride has closed a $33.3 million funding round to accelerate the rollout of its electric motorcycles and battery-swapping infrastructure across Africa, according to WeeTracker and Techeconomy. The raise is one of the larger single-round commitments in African electric-vehicle infrastructure to date, underscoring sustained investor appetite for last-mile mobility solutions on the continent.

ARC Ride's core model targets the vast network of motorcycle taxis — known as boda bodas in East Africa — that move millions of people and goods daily but run almost entirely on petrol. The company leases electric motorcycles to riders and operates battery-swapping stations so that a rider can exchange a depleted battery for a charged one in minutes, sidestepping the range anxiety and long charge times that have hobbled EV adoption elsewhere.

The $33.3 million infusion is earmarked for expanding that swapping network, growing the electric motorcycle fleet, and pushing into new African markets beyond Kenya, where the company is headquartered. Motorcycle-taxi operators represent a commercially attractive beachhead: they ride daily, clock high mileage, and bear significant fuel costs — making the economics of switching to cheaper electric power relatively straightforward to demonstrate.

The East African two-wheeler market is fiercely contested. ARC Ride competes with a clutch of well-funded rivals including Ampersand, which has built a battery-swap network in Rwanda and Kenya; BasiGo, which focuses on electric buses in Kenya; and M-KOPA, which has bundled asset-financing for electric motorcycles into its broader pay-as-you-go model and counts hundreds of thousands of customers across the region. The scale of this round gives ARC Ride fresh firepower to compete on fleet size and station density — two metrics that, in a network-effects business, tend to determine who survives.

From an investor standpoint, the round reflects a broader shift in how capital is being deployed into African climate tech. Battery-swap infrastructure is capital-intensive — stations, batteries, and fleet hardware all require upfront spending — which means the $33.3 million figure buys a finite amount of coverage before the company needs to either generate strong unit economics or return to market. The key question for backers will be how quickly ARC Ride can get its cost-per-kilometre below the petrol equivalent at scale, and whether swap-station utilisation rates can justify the real-estate and inventory overhead.

Kenya is a logical launchpad. The country has roughly three million registered motorcycles, the majority concentrated in urban and peri-urban transport. Fuel accounts for a substantial share of a boda boda rider's daily operating costs, and the government has signalled — through tax incentives and EV policy frameworks — a desire to transition the fleet. ARC Ride's pitch to riders is essentially a labour-economics argument: lower fuel costs, financed hardware, and daily swap access convert quickly into higher take-home pay.

Expansion beyond Kenya will test whether the model travels. Markets like Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Ethiopia each have large motorcycle-taxi ecosystems but differ sharply in grid reliability, regulation, and purchasing power — variables that determine whether a battery-swap station can run profitably. The capital from this round will need to fund not just hardware but the localised operations, rider training, and regulatory navigation each new market demands.
